Nothing wrong with something like a camp in Austria for some fitness work and a couple of low key games.
Best if its as isolated as possible

I share Kennedy of Chelsea's view of trips to China

USA did us no favours last year. I think tours like that only really favour the big boys.

`I think the preseason in Austria are superb. At least we didn't fuck off to usa or Asia`.

Really?? Playing at those shit holes?? We look 2 Bob .... give me decent friendlies in decent stadiums... and I have no problem doing the USA or Asia commercial wallop pre season... does not seem to do the big boys any problems what so ever... can you imagine CFC or MUFC playing on the shit holes we have the last few weeks... you play on rubbish more often than not you serve it up.... we have looked 2 Bob

It's same with actors. Crap dress rehearsal - brilliant first inght.

The old days were also dependent on there not being a phalanx of journos and live bloggers turning up at Grays. Instead of a link on the ticket website there'd be a wooden sign at The Recreation Ground saying Next Game West Ham.

I'd say that these types of pre-season tours are also about anonymity. A chance to get players fit, try different things and rotate the on-pitch personnel without it being observed by everyone and being picked apart. An opportunity to lose without everyone going apeshit due to less media coverage and fewer fans in attendance. In the old days there'd just be a line at the bottom of the sports pages saying "Grays Athletic 1-1 West Ham XI" and that was that.

Of course now every game is on telly with running commentaries on social media and pricks like us talking about it on here as if it's A Really Important Thing. But it still stands that West Ham in an Austrian or German camp playing middling or below-middling teams produces a lot less pressure than an evening at Southend in front of 6,000 local fans expecting a performance.

I think it's also good for the players to be away together, and helps the new players to get to know and bond with their team mates, as well as any new staff.

Add better weather, better scenery, better training facilities and better opposition.

Knicker wetters out in full over some friendlies. Pretty crap pre-season 2015 yet beat Arsenal away first game of season.

Nothing to judge on this really.

Pre-season preparations are helped by altitude training, hence why we often go abroad to do so, this time to Austria.

I agree about the more 'local' friendlies.

We won't find out anything new about the team/squad playing City in Iceland, although I'd still have liked to have been there to see it.

Run outs against Ipswich, Norwich, Southend and the like would have probably served us better. I don't know what the deal is with the German/Austria thing, but I'm not sure we've ever benefited from it.

Sven,

the common denominator for this is Billic. How many games will he be given before the board bites the bullet?

I think we'll have go with 3 at the back,as a back 4 we look pretty much as vulnerable as we did last season until we changed it!

Re: FC Altona 93 v The Happy Hammers Streams
I think its part of the criticism
We do have 4 new signings yet seem incapable of playing a warm up game with our best team on the park at any point.
As others have said it feels similar to last season where we sleep walked into the season and seemed woefully underprepared.

Only saw the highlights of last night but we seemed all at sea defending against German park players.
Often these things aren't just the fault of the defenders.
Most of last season we had no strikers so teams pushed up on us , our midfield gets overrun and then the defenders are exposed.
Have we remedied that ?
We shall see

Justin....you can't polish a turd ! we were playing against a German 4th division team of part timers and they put their fu**ing reserves on for the total of 2nd half.

Arnautovic and Hernandez look like they could do some damage for us this season.

What a bunch of negative cunts!

Oh dear, is it because its raining outside?

The new signings look great, Marko ran that show yesterday, Pea looked sharp when coming on, Hart to come in yet!

When we get the front four playing together, Pea, Lanzini, Marko and Ayew then judge!
